Standing on the Sun

Have you ever wondered why you feel so crappy in the winter or the gloomy weather and happier in the sunshine?

Winter months and rainy/ dreary weather lacks one main ingredient....the sun.

The sun gives us vitamin D, which immediately boosts our mood, our hair, and our skin. Many of us brown folk can attest to the change when the sun is shining on us.

I’m convinced we were not made for the northern weather and our DNA craves those melanin rays.

Now that May is coming to an end, anticipate the sun’s consistency.

I’d also encourage you to ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels at your next doctor’s appointment to ensure you're not dangerously deficient. leading to health risks; cardiovascular disease, poor insulin regulation and kidney function, cognitive impairment, and certain forms of cancer.

Studies show that vitamin D deficiencies affects the serotonin levels in the brain contributing to a depressed mood, particularly in the winter months and the gloomy weather. While taking vitamin supplements are beneficial, vitamin treatment is only minimally effective. Studies are still ongoing and have not been fully determined to be a substitute treatment for depression.

In other words, do not read this post as a substitute for connecting with a medical/mental health professional and seek the care of a direct care provider.

Holistically, it's a vital vitamin and worth discussing with your provider.

Now that sunny days are on the horizon, let's welcome nature's healing properties found in those melanin rays!
