Happy New Year!!

Updated: Jan 20, 2019

It's a new year and so far I feel as though I've been holding my breath, waiting for something exciting to happen, mostly because I've been quite active MAKING things happen, taking ( healthy) risks, and pushing myself towards some exciting new ventures.

I've recently accepted a common phrase used by Oprah as my own, " you are responsible for your own life" and have been taking that quite seriously.

I'm an only child and though I normally deny being spoiled, I secretly will admit to some bratty behavior. I've since outgrown some bratty tendencies ( thank goodness) but I'm sure many of us have come across adults who unfortunately present as adult brats.

Example 1: Someone who cannot accept when things do not go there way, so they resort to manipulation and attempting to control and hurt others.

It's quite ugly.

Example 2: Mistakes happen and failures may arise in life, so instead of using these moments for growth, this person blames everyone else, avoiding introspective searching.

The unfortunate aspect of adult brattiness is the lack of accountability which as in example 2, stunts growth. As we mature, it's important to be accountable as it leads to responsibility. It validates our confidence to make good decisions with consideration for consequences, and more importantly, the control of your life rests in your hands... well with God's ultimate control of course.

2019 will witness more areas of my life where I will actively assume more responsibility over my own life....not waiting at the mercy of anyone's validation or approval. It's a liberating feeling to take full responsibility for mistakes/failures and success, so I've become more thirsty for that fulfillment. Nothing brings me more joy than creating without a co-writer both literally and figurative. It's quite pleasurable to tell myself, "I did that!"

I wish the same for you. Do not wait for anyone to make decisions for you or become your savior, take a leap of faith, but be accountable every step of the way. Get in the driver's seat!

Clearly, this is a motivational discourse, however, responsibility also includes your self care. If you feel overwhelmed and too burdened to accomplish goals, do not further overwhelm yourself with harsh expectations.

Focus on achieving the goal of sound mental health FIRST, maybe with a life coach, counselor, or therapist, and return to your grind when necessary.

Success is not an overnight achievement and requires your full wellness.
